FAQ

Connect. Breathe. Flow.

What is Bachata?

Bachata is a social partner dance from the Dominican Republic known for its romantic music, smooth rhythms, and strong sense of connection. Danced around the world, Bachata is accessible to all levels and focuses on musicality, expression, and enjoying the dance with your partner.

What is Bachata Sensual? How is it different from other styles of Bachata?

Bachata Sensual is a modern style that emphasizes fluid movement, body isolations, and deep musical interpretation. Unlike other styles that focus more on footwork or playful rhythms, Bachata Sensual highlights smooth transitions, controlled technique, and close partner connection while maintaining respect and clear communication. It was born in Spain by founders Korke and Judith. Learn more with the link below!

How do I book a class?

You can book private lessons & workshops through our online booking service linked below! No need to purchase tickets for socials in advance – you can get them at the door.

I’ve never danced before. Can I still come to class?

We invite everybody to our events! It doesn’t matter if you’ve danced 100 different styles or if you’ve never stepped foot on a dance floor – if it says beginner-friendly, we will cover the basic steps and we would LOVE to have you.

It’s rare that one of our classes isn’t beginner-friendly. However, we will occasionally hold workshops for those with prior bachata experience so that we can use the full time to build on their foundation. If that’s the case, it will be clearly stated on the flyer.

What should I expect for my first class?
  • In a 1-hour drop-in class, you can expect a layout something like the following:
  • 5 min warm up
  • 5-10 min basics
  • 5-10 min footwork
  • 5 min connection exercise
  • 20-30 min partnerwork
  • 5 min recap and demo

What clothes do I wear?

Anything you feel comfortable moving around in. People wear anything from leggings and a tank top, to sparkly dresses, to cargo pants and a sweatshirt, to jumpsuits…you do you.

People tend to dress up more for socials than for something like a workshop. Occasionally, the socials will have a “theme”, which would be stated clearly in the name of the event.

What shoes do I wear?

If you don’t have dance shoes, wear the *least* grippy shoes you have. This will allow you to turn and spin with less force on your ankles.

Sholeh’s personal favorite dance shoes are Fuegos. You can get 10% off your order with the code BachataConnection or with the link below!

There are some newer dance shoes on the market through Pulse. You can also get 10% off any order through them with the code BachataConnection or with the link below!

How often are the group events?

Unfortunately, the socials and workshops are not hosted on a consistent schedule. Hosted by a medial student with a schedule that varies week by week, Bachata Connection events are hosted when possible. See the upcoming events tab for the next events!

Where are the classes located?

Currently, Bachata Connection is based in the Tri Cities, WA. Recent classes have been held at Daisy Ranch Saloon & Red Jasper Studio. Private lessons are hosted in Richland; please reach out for address. Socials are still hosted in Yakima, WA.

Do I need a partner for class?

Nope! We always rotate partners in group classes. We believe that connection can make-or-break a dance and highly value practicing with as many different people as possible. Each person you dance with will have a different connection and will enhance your ability to feel the tiny movements that make Sensual Bachata possible.

That being said, partner rotation is *optional*. If you have somebody that you want to dance with and you’re not interested in rotating, you do not have to! We will ask at the beginning of every class if there’s anybody opting out of rotations.

What if I don’t want to dance “sensual”?

Totally okay! You do not have to. Any “sensual” moves that we teach are always optional.
